Bilateral Relations

1, Political Relations the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Lesotho established diplomatic relations in April 1983. In April 1990, the Lesotho military government resumed the so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which consequently led to the severance of China-Lesotho diplomatic relations. On January 12, 1994, the government of Basotho Congress Party reestablished diplomatic relations with China. Since then the bilateral relations between the two countries have enjoyed smooth development.

There were many senior officials of China and Lesotho to pay visits to the other country since the reestablishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

2, Cultural exchanges China and Lesotho signed an implementation agreement on cultural exchanges in 2000. Between 2001 and 2004, the two sides realized the exchange of of visits by culture ministers and cultural troops. Fine arts and paintings from each nation were exhibited respectively in capitals of the two countries.

3, Education China donated a computer lab to National University of Lesotho (NUL) in 2000. 4 teachers have taught in NUL since 2001. The Government of China provides two (on an average basis) scholarships for Lesotho students annually. There are 8 Basotho students now studying in China.

4, Health China sent its first medical team to Lesotho in June 1997 and the second team to Lesotho in June 1999. The third team of 7 medical personnel began their work in Lesotho in November 2002. The fourth team of 15 doctors is now working in Queen II Hospital in Maseru.
